Positive and Negative Leadership Attributes
Being a leader is a great responsibility which is why so many will strive for a leadership role. Though this sort of pursuit is a commendable one, there is something which must be understood about leadership. It's one thing to aim to become a leader, and it is a completely different thing to step into a leadership role and go about leading in the correct way. Though it can be rather downbeat to discuss poor leadership qualities, you must understand them to avoid the trap of embodying them.

In order to understand the traits of a good leader, you should avoid a few common poor traits some people in leadership positions present. A common example of this is somebody who embodies a histrionic personality. For those people wondering how a histrionic personality will behave in a leadership role, the answer is they're going to behave in a self-centered manner. In many ways, a histrionic leader is somebody who is solely interested in drawing attention to himself or herself for the sole purpose of achieving compliments. Now, there is nothing inherently bad with desiring acclaim and compliments, but this type of self-serving attitude is not one that serves the primary goal of being a leader which is, of course, to lead.

While the histrionic personality can be a weak leader and even overbearing from time to time, nothing is worse than the leader who is a bully. Then again, to call a bully a leader is an oxymoron. A bullying approach to leadership is one that involves a lot of ranting, pressuring, and threats of corrective action. Needless to say, you might get your subordinates to go along with you, but this is not leadership by any stretch of the imagination.

So, why do many fall into such categories in spite of the flawed nature of such false leadership methods? Basically, they're overwhelmed in the job or they just aren't cut out for it. Even worse, they are not taking the proactive step to properly embody what is required to assume the role of an effective leader.

Questions will arise regarding what is the proper approach to take if you want to be a very good leader. There are quite a few attributes solid leaders have. It would be difficult to list all of them, but you could sum up the qualities in the sense they should always be positive in their attitude and approach. Also, they're decidedly not self-centered.

An effective leader will be a team player and not someone who wishes to be placed on a pedestal for his or her work. There'll be a decided amount of empathy for subordinates. A great leader will be a good communicator, a positive person, and always focused. Does this mean someone who may currently lack these qualities will never be a good selection for a leader? Absolutely no, any individual can improve their present skill level at being a leader. As long as there is a sincere desire to improve, there is absolutely no reason why improvements can't be made.
